Chelsea star Branislav Ivanovic, Arsenal target-man Olivier Giroud and in-form Tottenham Hotspur sensation Harry Kane and set to duke it out for The PFA Fans’ Player of the Month award, with one of the three due to pick up the accolade for their fine displays in February.
That’s according to the London Evening Standard, who cite Manchester City’s James Milner, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and West Ham’s Cheikhou Kouyate as the other candidates for the award. There’s no doubting though that the first trio are the leading names in the race, with each man able to boast an impressive goal haul since the beginning of this month.
Blues fans will most certainly be rooting for Ivanovic, as well might be the majority of neutrals. The Chelsea right-back followed up his League Cup semi-final clincher against Liverpool at the end of January by scoring the winner during his side’s first Premier League game of this month at Villa Park, before then netting an all-important equaliser against Paris Saint-Germain the first of the Champions League round of 16.
He finished by grabbing what turned out to be a goal that got the league leaders a point against Burnley last weekend.
Meanwhile Giroud enjoyed a period that will have silenced critics over his proficiency in front of goal, recording four strikes for Arsenal including a classy FA Cup brace against Middlesborough to set up a quarter-final tie against rivals Manchester United.
The France international opened his account for the month on February 1 during the 5-0 rout of Aston Villa, whilst also got the winning goal in the most recent outing against Crystal Palace.
Of course most striker-related praise has befittingly been bestowed upon Harry Kane, who continues to tear defences apart on a routine basis. His showing in the north London derby against Arsenal was a particular highlight that could stand him in good stead for the award, as his two goals gave Spurs all three points.
Elsewhere the youngster also scored during the defeat to Liverpool and then again via a rebounded penalty in the dying minutes of last weekend’s fixture against West Ham.
All in all three candidates, all of whom have a fair shout at winning. Kane and Ivanovic might just deserve to edge Giroud given the importance of their respective goals against Arsenal and PSG, whilst if it is to be a two-horse race one might favour the Serbian defender simply due to the fact that strikes from a full-back are usually far harder to come by.
Giroud could though give himself another boost if he scores in the Champions League against AS Monaco tonight.
Voting is set to close this Saturday (28th) and the winner will be announced on March 2. Football fans, who do you think deserves to take home the trophy? Let us know in the comments box below...
