Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has insisted that Geoffrey Kondogbia was exactly the type of player Arsenal needed to sign, reports the Daily Mail.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the Gunners went down by three goals to one against the French outfit, Redknapp hailed the performance, while delivering a damning verdict on some of the top stars in north London.
In fact, Redknapp claimed that the Gunners' midfield 'couldn't tackle a hot dinner' as they suffered a humiliating defeat on home soil.
"Arsenal were off the cuff. I didn’t think Coquelin was too bad but he was taken off as he was booked so Arsenal were left with Cazorla, a wonderfully gifted attacking player, Rosicky, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain,' Redknapp said in the Sky studio.
"That midfield couldn’t tackle a hot dinner! Kondogbia was incredible for Monaco, he was exactly the player Arsenal needed to sign."
Kondogbia, via a Per Mertesacker deflection, opened the scoring at the Emirates last night, while former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco condemned the Gunners to a first-leg defeat.
There's no doubt about it, Arsenal face an almighty task to overturn the deficit on Fench soil, but will have to be at their sublime best in order to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.
At the end of the day, the Gunners have endured problems in the middle of the park for some time now. For one reason or another, the Gunners chief has often overlooked powerful players in order to bring small, technically gifted stars to the club.
Unfortunately for Wenger and Co., though, this can only get the club so far as struggle to make an impact on the European scene.
Redknapp is right
Of course, it was only a one off game, but it's hard to argue with Jamie Redknapp's comments on Kondogbia.
While he provided the steel and class in the Monaco midfield, Arsenal looked vulnerable in the middle of the park and were clearly in need of a player in the mould of the Frenchman.
And, at just 22-years-old, Kondogbia is only going to improve over the coming months and years, so Arsenal may well have missed their big chance. Wenger has to do something about his side's midfield problems this summer.
