Manchester United youngster Reece James has signed a new deal at Old Trafford, reports the club's official site.
James, who was set to run out of contract at the club at the end of the campaign, now looks set to stay on in Manchester for the long term as he looks to force his way into Louis van Gaal's plans at the club.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a fine pre-season with the club and made his competitive debut in the club's humiliating defeat to League One outfit MK Dons earlier on in this campaign.
However, Van Gaal has clearly seen enough of the youngster to keep him on the club's books, but it remains to be seen as to whether he will play a key role at Old Trafford anytime soon.
James, who can also play in midfield, will no doubt be looking to compete with the likes of Luke Shaw for a spot at left-back in the not too distant future.
Earlier today, United confirmed that James' fellow defender Tyler Blackett had extended his stay with the club by signing a new two-year deal. Blackett has enjoyed a fine breakthrough season at the Theatre of Dreams, having been called upon on a number of times under the Van Gaal regime.
Blackett - like James - will no doubt be hoping to force his way into the Red Devils' starting XI on a consistent basis in the next couple of years.
United fans will certainly be pleased that Van Gaal is keeping hold of some of his young stars, but many will be hoping that the likes of Andreas Pereira and James Wilson commit their futures at the club too.
One for the future
There's no doubt about it, after proving his credentials in pre-season, a new deal for the youngster is deserved. Despite struggling to find a place in the club's first-team plans this term, it certainly appears that he's highly rated by his manager.
James, then, should work hard over the coming months and look to make an impact under the Van Gaal regime next term. He certainly has the ability, but must now prove himself as he goes in search of progression.
