Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has decided that Rafael da Silva has no future at Old Trafford beyond this season, following a meeting with executive vice-president Ed Woodward this week about this summer's transfer strategy.
That is according to The Telegraph, who report that United will listen to offers for Rafael after Van Gaal made it clear that he wants an upgrade at right-back next season.
Rafael has failed to impress Van Gaal over the last six months, which means a man with more than 160 appearances for United and three Premier League winner's medal must start planning for life away from Old Trafford.
McNair part of the problem for Rafael
The South American star has endured a disappointing campaign, thanks largely to a series of persistent injury problems. Just nine appearances in the Premier League all season long tells its own story, with youngster Paddy McNair now preferred and viewed as a player capable of carving out a long-term future as a United regular.
McNair didn't even have a wikipedia page at the start of the season, but the 19-year-old has grabbed his first-team chance with both hands and left a full Brazil international facing an uncertain future at the highest level.

Van Gaal is making the right call
United fans will be disappointed to see a key figure in their last title success leave Old Trafford, but in truth Rafael has never matched the heights of that 2012-13 campaign over the last two years.
Rafael was nothing short of sensational that season and proved he's a potent attacking threat bombing on down the right wing, with a memorable goal at Anfield sticking out in terms of career highlights for the Red Devils.
A volatile streak coupled with a tendency to lose concentration at key moments has undermined those qualities though, with Van Gaal not seeing an upside to keeping a player who is out of contract at the end of next summer.
United have to sell this summer to have any hope of fetching a decent fee for the 24-year-old, which means Van Gaal has taken a pragmatic decision which will allow him to go out and sign a quality replacement such as Southampton stand-out Nathaniel Clyne.
