The WWE appear to have parted ways with long-time fan favorite Rey Mysterio and, while the wrestler's departure from the organization was noted only by a subtle update to WWE's official website yesterday, an update on the situation today has revealed that it was long in the pipe line.
As reported by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer, an agreement between the WWE and Rey Mysterio to part ways had been in place as far back as late 2014.
The report claims that, despite rumor and speculation concerning Mysterio's WWE future doing the rounds for months, the two sides had agreed way back in November or early December that the Superstar would leave the company when his contract expires at the end of February.
Rey keeping quiet
Eagle eyed fans originally spotted that Mysterio appeared to have left the WWE when they noticed WWE had transferred Rey Mysterio's information from the 'main roster' to their 'Alumni' section of their website,
The wrestler himself is yet to speak on the departure but, with his contract believed to have expired on Thursday, Mysterio has finally been allowed to seek employment elsewhere after a fairly tumultuous end to his WWE career.

The WWE confirmed his exit with a very brief statement, hinting at the ongoing tension. Indeed, Konnan, a long-time friend of Rey Mysterio, noted that the wrestler's departure is not ending on good terms.
"They drive people crazy over there," Konnan explained on a podcast yesterday.
"There's a lot of disrespect...Everybody that leaves there, they tell you it sucks. They weren't going to do nothing with Rey. Rey was not happy there, so good. Let's part ways. Let him do his s**t."
Ending on a bad note
Rey Mysterio began working with WWE back in 2002 but has not appeared on a regular basis for close to a year after letting WWE know he wanted out.
As for what is next for the masked wrestler, rumors are abound that Mysterio will make an appearance at a AAA press conference next week. A move to one of WWE's rival Mexican wrestling promotions is widely expected, and perhaps there fans will finally see the resurgence of a once popular star.
