Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has confirmed that both Manchester United and Barcelona wanted to sign him last summer.
The 20-year-old, who is widely considered one of the world’s best young centre-backs, was linked with the two European giants last summer - but a move failed to materialise.
The Brazil international admits there was considerable interest from both United and Barcelona in his services, but feels happy at the Parc des Princes and is now keen to renew his contract with the French champions.
Marquinhos: United and Barcelona wanted me
"Manchester United and Barcelona wanted me," Marquinhos told French channel Telefoot, according to Spanish newspaper Sport. "Those two clubs negotiated with PSG but the club didn't want to sell me.
"That gave me confidence. The president and the manager are happy with me. It would be good to renew [my contract] in Paris because I am happy here."

Marquinhos a key player for PSG
Despite the arrival of compatriot David Luiz from Chelsea - in a deal worth a remarkable £50 million - Marquinhos has played an important role at PSG this season, having made a total of 28 appearances in all competitions for the Parisians.
This is why reports surfaced earlier this year claiming PSG would only consider selling defender if they received a world-record bid worth £112 million.
United still trying to sign Marquinhos
Manchester United - or any other club for that matter - are understandably not prepared to pay that absurd sum of money for Marquinhos, despite his immense talent and potential, while PSG are under no obligation to sell.
But that hasn’t stopped the Red Devils from increasing their efforts to sign the South American defender in recent weeks.
It’s understood that United made contact with the youngster’s representatives last month, while recent reports from France claimed the player was open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford - as long as the English club were prepared to double his current salary.
United must look elsewhere - transfer isn't happening
Marquinhos is contracted to PSG until the summer of 2018 - and the fact he has now publicly admitted he would like to renew his contract with the Ligue 1 title holders means a potential summer transfer to Manchester United now appears extremely unlikely.
This, in turn, means Louis van Gaal will be forced to turn his attentions to other defensive targets.
Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels has been strongly linked with a move to the Red Devils. The Germany international isn’t the quickest of centre-backs but would bring some much-needed discipline to United’s back-line.
Raphael Varane has also been linked, but the chances of Real Madrid selling the France international are even slimmer than PSG agreeing to offload Marquinhos for a reasonable fee.
United need a new reliable centre-back who isn’t injury prone - but while Marquinhos does fit the bill, there appears to be no realistic chance of him ending up at Old Trafford this summer.
