Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal recently made the claim that the Red Devils' Premier League campaign was suffering because they did not have a striker who was scoring 20 goals a season.
This caused something of a backlash among fans of the Old Trafford club and commentators on the game, not least because Wayne Rooney literally averages just about 20 per season at Manchester United.
Nevertheless, the Dutch coach may yet feel none of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and the club captain are currently capable. So, summer brings with it the transfer window and United have the cash to solve pretty much any personnel issue - they can just buy one.
Bagging yourself 20 goals in no mean feat, however, but here are five stars who are more than capable and, should they so wish, would not be bad signings at all for Van Gaal to make an assault on the Premier League title next term.
Harry Kane has had quite simply an outstanding season so far for Tottenham and has scored the most goals across all competitions this season.
Kane has proven his goal scoring abilities this season and with still two months plus to go this season Kane could score at least 30 goals in all competitions and that would be quite an achievement for the twenty one year old striker.
The 21-year-old has scored goals in the big Premier League games against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea as well as scoring plenty of goals in the Europa league for Spurs.
However before United would pay the amount of money that Spurs would undoubtedly demand for their top player he needs to have a similar campaign next season.
Cavani appears to have been unsettled at PSG ever since his big money move from Napoli to the French side so a move to United may suit the Uruguayan. He hasn’t had the same performances he had at Napoli but is a proven goal scorer at the highest level and has experience of playing and scoring in the Champions League.
Cavani has been linked with a move to the Premier League, especially to United, in recent months and has been highlighted as a potential replacement to Falcao. However, the 28-year-old doesn’t like playing out of position at PSG so if a move to United becomes reality he would need to play in his strongest position for him to be at his most effective.
United’s current Colombian striker has been out of form most of the season but the same cannot be said of fellow Colombian Jackson Martinez. The Porto striker is often overlooked when people are talking about bringing in a striker to a club.
Martinez has scored at least twenty goals a season in his last two seasons at Porto and is well set to score twenty plus goals this season. There is a big difference between the Portuguese league and the premier league but Martinez has the quality to score goals at any level and would possibly be a cheaper option than someone like Cavani.
Before his move to Bayern Munich Lewandowski was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford put opted to join the German champions but in recent weeks rumours of a move to United have surfaced once again.
Lewandowski hasn’t had a great season for Bayern and has struggled for goals this season especially by the standards he set himself after a few great seasons with Borussia Dortmund. At only twenty six lewandowski is nearly three years younger than United’s current first team strikers so could also be a good player for a long time.
Lacazette has had a great season with Lyon and has fired his team back up the league table to be title challenges once again in France. He is a long way clear of Zlatan Ibrahimović in the goal scoring charts, which shows just what a good season he has had.
As well as his goal scoring attributes he also has lots of pace and could give United that injection of pace that United have been missing this season.
