The Sun are reporting that an unnamed Premier League footballer has been arrested over allegations of under-age sex with a 15-year-old today. The paper also claim that an apparently legally-owned loaded gun was found at his £1.85 million mansion.
The story, which is now live on the Sun's website, claims that three unmarked police cars and a van were seen at the house carrying a number of plain-clothed police officers who spent the morning searching the residence.
A neighbour told the Sun: “All the main activity was between 9.15am and 9.35am. Three undercover cars and a scenes of crime van arrived.
“You could tell they were police officers, they were all dressed in black. I haven’t seen the player all day. I just assumed there had been a burglary. As far as I know he lives there with his girlfriend.”
A police source said: "He has been arrested over claims he has had a relationship with a girl aged 14.”
The name of the footballer in question remains a mystery, and the Sun claim that he is a regular for a Premier League club. He has also represented England.
The story on the Sun carries a picture of a police officer outside a house near an unmarked van, and it also carries the claim that police paid particularly close attention to the triple-garage at the home.
As yet there is no information over whether the player has been charged with any offence or if he is still in police custody.
BBC Sport editor Dan Roan has subsequently tweeted that Durham Police have confirmed to him that a 27-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl aged under 16-years-old.
He also confirmed that the Police had informed BBC Sport that the man in question is still in police custody.
