Manchester United are leading the race to sign Brazilian international Danilo, with Barcelona ready to drop their interest into the Porto defender after learning his agent has travelled to England for transfer talks with the Red Devils.
That is according to Barcelona-based daily newspaper Sport, who report that the Red Devils are willing to meet Porto's whopping €40million asking price to bring the right-back to Old Trafford this summer.
Danilo could well be the man to replace compatriot Rafael at the Theatre of Dreams, because the talented full-back had failed to convince United manager Louis van Gaal he has what it takes to thrive under his leadership so far this season.
Danilo is man in high demand
United are far from alone in viewing Danilo as the latest man capable of swapping Porto for one of Europe's top domestic competitions, with Barca and also Real Madrid keeping a close on on the Selecao stars progress.
The 23-year-old is out of contract next summer and that means Porto's best chance of securing a sizeable transfer fee for the promising right-back looks set to come when the current campaign concludes, but would be represent an upgrade on Rafael or any other option United already have at right-back?
Would Clyne offer better value for money?
Van Gaal comes across as a character with very concrete ideas when it comes to transfer policy, but it remains to be seen if Danilo would represent a more astute purchase than some of the Premier League's top players in his position.
Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne is a prime example, a player in the form of his life and capable of making further strides after a tremendous 18 months at St Mary's.
Clyne has something else in common with Danilo, he's out of contract in the summer of 2016. That means there's definitely bargaining room when it comes to both, so Van Gaal has to think very carefully about which players best fits the philosophy he's so desperate to implement at United.
Danilo has a strong CV in his own right and was even being considered by Barca as the man to replace Dani Alves, so perhaps that's why United are so keen to make him their first major summer signing. The Red Devils should proceed with caution though, because as United fans have already seen this season a bumper transfer fee is absolutely no guarantee of instant success.
Man United fans, do you like the sound of Danilo as the man to replace Rafael for next season, or does Nathaniel Clyne or perhaps even Seamus Coleman fit the bill? Let us know by having your say in the comment box below.
