Ander Herrera hails David de Gea

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has hailed goalkeeper David de Gea after his tremendous performance in the Red Devils' 1-0 victory over Newcastle United last night.

As reported by the club's official site, the Spanish midfielder has in fact claimed that the club's No.1 shot-stopper could be the best in the world following yet another clean sheet at St James' Park.

De Gea, who was awarded the man of the match award, produced a number of fine saves, with a stop from Emmanuel Riviere the standout of them all.

On the performance of De Gea, Herrera said: "After the goal De Gea made a great save. I think we have maybe the best goalkeeper in the world, and he showed it again. The team played very, very well, but with David De Gea in goal, we are very, very calm."

Wide-man Ashley Young, who proved the match winner last night with his late goal, also hailed De Gea, insisting that he deserved the Man of the Match award.

The ex-Aston Villa man said: “If you speak to anyone at the club, they’ll tell you how important he is. He’s been fantastic all season, and it was a great save at the end; he definitely deserved to get Man of the Match. That’s his job, that’s what he’s in the team to do.”

Big win for United

There's no doubt about it, last night's victory proved a crucial three points for the Red Devils in their race to secure Champions League qualification for next season. With the trio of Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool all winning, it was imperative that Van Gaal's side secured the points against John Carver's side.

Next up for the Red Devils, though, will be a showdown with rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Monday night.

United must keep De Gea

It's an obvious statement, but Manchester United must do all they can to keep De Gea at the club. After winning the club's Player of the Year award for last season, the Spanish international is on course to secure the honour once again this term.

He's seemingly getting better and better between the sticks and will no doubt give the Red Devils the platform for glory if they manage to secure his services for the long term. It may be slightly too early to call him the world's best, but he's certainly well on his way to proving just that.

It's crucial United secure him to a new deal sooner rather than later as they go in search of long term success under the Van Gaal regime.
