Diego Simeone has not agreed a new contract extension with Atletico Madrid because he is hoping to land the Manchester City job at the end of the season if Manuel Pellegrini is relieved of his duties according to reports.
With Simeone building up a reputation as one of the best young coaches in the game it is no wonder that other big clubs are interested in the former Inter Milan and Lazio midfielder. The 44-year-old is understood to be interested in expanding his C.V by managing in the Premier League and Manchester City this summer could be the destination for him.
It is looking highly likely that Manuel Pellegrini will not be in the Manchester City hot seat come the start of next season, as the Manchester City hierarchy are losing patience with managers failing on the biggest stage in Europe. However, despite Pellegrini struggling in Europe this season he does have a Premier League and League Cup title under his belt from last season but with Manchester City effectively out of all competitions the board are far from impressed. It has to be said that City are still in Europe and still in their tie so it could be a little rash to effectively dismiss the Chilean now.
There are several managers in the running but Pep Guardiola came out publicly to rule himself out of the job which will have left City disappointed, as Guardiola is regarded as one of the best managers in game at the moment.
The only other candidate is Carlo Ancelotti who has experience of the Premier League with Chelsea by winning the Premier League and F.A Cup in just two seasons. Ancelotti will be judged at the end of the season and even if he wins the double he could still get sacked as the Real Madrid board are that unpredictable.
With Ancelotti the favourite to land the job, it is clearly Simeone who wants it. He is still under contract at Atletico Madrid until 2017 but he could take the Manchester City job if it arises at end of the season. Simeone is just mulling things over but this puts more pressure on Manuel Pellegrini.
Having proved he can produce the goods when it comes to the big stage having won La Liga, Europa League, Copa Del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and finishing runner up in last season Champions League, Simeone clearly has the credentials to manage at the highest level and Manchester City may regret not appointing him this summer.
Simeone would be the way to go for Manchester City as he has proved it in both competitions in Europe which is clearly what the City board want. Simeone has an incredible passion for the game that fans just lap up and Manchester City fans would lap it up if they appoint Diego Simeone.
