Arsenal are considering a surprise summer move for AS Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli, as Arsene Wenger looks to further strengthen his backline at the Emirates Stadium.
According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the Gunners are keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old centre-back, who is currently enjoying a productive loan spell with Serie 'A' rivals Sampdoria.
With first-team opportunities limited at Stadio Olimpico this term, Rudi Garcia allowed Romagnoli to leave the Giallorossi on a temporary deal and continue his development with more regular action.
The versatile stopper has impressed in 19 appearances for Sinisa Mihajlovic's side in 2014/15, contributing one goal and one assist during his stint at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
His stand-out performances have caught the eye of Premier League suitors, with Wenger ready to offer him the chance of moving to north London providing Arsenal can negotiate a fee with Roma.
Romagnoli's capability of operating at left-back is another valuable attribute that the Gunners boss likes about the Italy U21 international, and part of the reason why he's ready to firm up his interest in another defender so soon after acquiring the services of Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal in the January window.
The French tactician was heavily criticised for his failure to replace former captain Thomas Vermaelen following his departure to Barcelona last summer, so the possible addition of two defensive minded stars in quick succession will probably come as a welcome surprise to Arsenal supporters, who have become accustomed to a shortage in that department.
