Manchester City have placed Jack Wilshere at the top of their summer transfer wish list as they look to boost the amount of homegrown players in their squads, reports the Daily Star.
The 23-year-old's development has stalled at Arsenal and Manuel Pellegrini is in desperate need of more homegrown players for his squad next season.
The shortlist also includes Ross Barkley and Aaron Cresswell but Wilshere is the No.1 target.
Arsenal have seen a host of players make the move to the Etihad in recent years. Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor and, most recently, Bacary Sagna, have swapped the Gunners for the Citizens. Patrick Vieira is also the head of their elite development squad.
Manchester City officials know Wilshere will be a tough deal to crack. The England international is happy in north London and Arsenal are no longer required to generate funds through player sales.
New contract offer
Wilshere has a contract until 2018 and Arsenal have already offered him a £150,000-a-week deal to try to extend that deal by a further two years.
However, there is a sense that Wilshere's place in the Arsenal squad has evaporated this season. Francis Coquelin has emerged as a first-team option while Aaron Ramsey has only grown more vital.
Should he be sold?
Wilshere has suffered another serious ankle injury this year, delivering another huge blow to his career. Arsene Wenger must be concerned that the youth product won't reach his full potential and may well decide to cash in.
Of course, Wilshere is a fan favourite and Arsenal fans will be incredulous if Wenger sells him to a direct rival. But the fact remains that there is a chance his footballing ability won't be missed.
