Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan is unlikely to receive another invitation to call MUTV after deliberately trolling the wife of Manchester United star Jonny Evans live on air.
Morgan, a famously emotional Arsenal fan who is by no means a stranger to controversy, started his phone call by asking Helen Evans - a regular presenter at MUTV - whether she had any comment to make about the spit-gate incident which resulted in her husband being slapped with a six-match ban from the FA on Saturday.
Footage showed Evans spitting in the general director of Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse during last week’s Premier League match at St James’ Park - but Evans’ wife told Morgan her husband is completely innocent.
Morgan trolls Helen Evans on air
Morgan opened the phone call by asking Evans’ wife: “Have you got any comment to make about spit-gate?”
“No,” she replied. “Thought you might start with that one.”
Evans: My husband is innocent
Former Manchester United defender David May, who looked distinctly unimpressed with Morgan’s questioning, then chimed in with this classic sentence: “She wouldn’t spit on you, mate, even if you were on fire.”
Helen Evans added: “He didn’t even realise he has been spat back at until after the game and watched the footage. People can believe what they want but that’s the truth.”
Morgan predicts Arsenal to beat United 5-0
Morgan, who has earned himself a reputation for being a wind-up merchant, the reminded the presenters that they should ask for his prediction ahead of Monday night’s FA Cup quarter-final between United and Arsenal at Old Trafford.
“5-0 Arsenal, Giroud hat-trick,” Morgan added. “I’m also predicting at least three members of the Manchester United team to be sent off for spitting.”
