Arsenal are preparing to add further to their defensive ranks in the coming summer transfer window and are getting ready to send scouts to get a close look at a player who has also drawn the attention of Manchester United.
According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners have heard good things about Dynamo Kiev centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic and will despatch scouts to watch him during the Ukrainian side's Europa League clash with Everton this week.
The report claims that Arsene Wenger is keen to add even greater depth to his back line come the summer, despite already signing Gabriel from Villareal in the January transfer window and Calum Chambers last summer.
Louis van Gaal has had struggles with his defence this season and there have been more than a few suggestions that the current personnel are not up to the job of maintaining a title challenge.
If this report is anything to go by , then the Manchester United manager agrees as it claims Van Gaal has also had Old Trafford scouts taking a look at Dragovic, who could cost as much as £15million to sign.
Arsenal's interest suggests that Per Mertesacker's time as a first choice in the starting XI could be up come next season, possibly even his future at the club. He was dropped after a horror-show against Monaco in the Champions League, though some suggest he was rested.
Dragovic is obviously a talented young defender, but it would be a mistake by Wenger to sign him and discard Mertesacker this summer. Granted, he has not been the same since returning from Germany's World Cup triumph in the summer, but he still has a lot to give.
Arsenal Still Need Per
Gabriel has only made a handful of performances (and is obviously already injured) and though has looked decent, is clearly not ready to be counted on just yet. Mertesacker's experience is vital to Arsenal and he still has at least another season in him.
Meanwhile, people are forgetting how well Chambers played in central defence earlier this season, some were already calling him the next big thing The former Southampton man is one for the future and signing another defender would ruin his development.
