Tottenham could be set to anger Southampton fans again by returning to the south coast to sign yet another Saints asset, this time on-loan defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Atletico Madrid centre back has impressed since signing on loan for Ronald Koeman's men, making 18 appearances, scoring once. He was only signed by the Spanish champions in 2013 from Ajax, and the Belgium international could be set to move on again if the Daily Mirror is to be believed.
Buying in a defender
Spurs' head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, is rumoured to be in the market for a centre back in the summer. Discarded captain Younes Kaboul and Romanian Vlad Chiriches will be heading to the exit door once the window opens and are highly unlikely to make a match day squad for the remainder of the season given Tottenham now only have league football left to play.
The north London side have been linked with former Pochettino charge Hector Moreno, Monaco's Aymen Abdennour and West Ham's Winston Reid, but the latter two have signed new contracts at their clubs while Moreno is recovering from a broken leg.
That could leave Southampton vulnerable. Koeman's side have performed above expectations after the loss of Pochettino and the likes of Luke Shaw, Callum Chambers and Adam Lallana. However, that did not stop the vultures circling as Spurs have returned for Head of Recruitment Paul Mitchell and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is a target for both north London clubs. Alderweireld could be next.
Southampton have an option to make the transfer permanent but it is by no means exclusive and Spurs could nip in. However, with Dier and Vertonghen performing well, Alderweireld may prefer the guarantee of first team football after his unsuccessful move to Spain.
Tottenham fans, what do you think to Alderweireld? Southampton fans, will Ronaldo Koeman ever let him go?
