Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is set to step up his interest in Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne after Dani Alves reportedly agreed to join French moneybags Paris Saint-Germain.
This has been reported by the Mirror, who have claimed that Van Gaal will make the Saints ace his priority target in July as he goes in search of improving the Red Devils' back-line.
United have endured a torrid time at the back this term, with the club often looking vulnerable defensively. In fact, in the right-back position, Van Gaal has more often than not opted for versatile Ecuadorian Antonio Valecina, with flamboyant Brazilian Rafael da Silva struggling for opportunities.
It appears, then, that the hiearchy will look to swoop for Clyne after deciding against joining PSG in the race for Alves, who runs out of contract at La Liga giants Barcelona at the end of this season.
In fact, the same report have claimed that Alves is set to sign a three year deal with PSG, which would rule him out of a move to English soil.
Clyne, then, would no doubt prove quite the coup for the Old Trafford outfit as they go in search of long term success under the Dutch regime. The right-back has enjoyed a fine season at the St Mary's and has even been linked with a move to United's Premier League rivals Chelsea of late.
A move to Manchester, however, would see him link up with former teammate Luke Shaw, who moved to the Theatre of Dreams in a big money deal last summer.
There's no doubt about it, a new right-back is needed at Old Trafford, with the likes of Valencia and Rafael failing to prove their credentials on a consistent basis for the club this term.
Clyne, on the other hand, has proved a leading player for the Saints throughout the course of the campaign, and would no doubt help stabilise the Red Devils' back-line.
A move for Clyne may even help Shaw settle at the club, with the youngster having struggled at times throughout his debut season with the Premier League giants. He'd certainly prove a soild signing, and one that United desperately crave.
