The prospect of Manchester United re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo once again has come up again, as reports have emerged claiming that Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson went to visit his former charge and told him to make a glorious homecoming.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Ferguson had dinner with the Real Madrid superstar after their shambolic loss to Schalke in the Champions League on Tuesday and told the time was right to return to the Red Devils.

Ferguson’s plea came after Madrid were subjected to boos and whistles from the Bernabeu crowd following the 4-3 defeat to the Bundesliga club, who were one goal away from knocking the holders out on away goals.

Ronaldo scored a brace in the first half to equalise twice but his celebrations were angry and he looked despondent in the centre circle after the match, despite the 2-0 win from the first leg sending them into the quarter-finals.

The report claims there is plenty of uncertainty about his future, despite signing a new contract only a year-and-a-half ago, and this was not helped by his refusing to speak to anyone after the Schalke loss.

Ronaldo moved to Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 for a then world record £80million and the Red Devils could do with his brilliance six years later, as they are struggling to perform under Louis van Gaal so far this season.

If there is any possibility of United bringing back the Ballon d’Or winner then they need to do everything they can to exploit it. It may cost them a fortune, but there is only one other player in the world who can match Ronaldo’s prowess in front of goal.

Ferguson’s influence should not be understated either, as Ronaldo has more often than not claimed the Scot was like a father figure to him and that he has never felt so at home than when he was at Old Trafford. Van Gaal will be grateful for his predecessor’s help, this would be the ultimate favour.
