It’s usually the other way around in football matches; the officials are the ones who have abuse hurled at them.
And yet, an incident during a Campeonato Paulista match on Sunday reminded us of the importance of match officials remaining stern in the face of player’s protests. and not bowing down to pressure and abuse directed at them.
No backing down
The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, came as a refreshing and welcome surprise, especially after the unsavoury scenes witnessed at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

We have become accustomed to the sight of referees being surrounded by hordes of players and being insulted at every dissatisfactory decision they perceive to be unjust.
In this case though the Brazilian official was quick to dismiss this idea that referees are more often than not influenced by player protests, as she screamed in Ponte Preta midfielder Biro Biro’s face following his complaints after she had awarded the opposition a throw-in.
