Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Memphis Depay in what would be their first deal of the summer transfer window, reports Goal.
The PSV Eindhoven star has emerged as one of the best young players in European football this season and has attracted the interest from several of the Premier League's biggest clubs. Liverpool and Tottenham have been linked with with a summer move, but Manchester United are set to seal his signature.
Depay, 21, has already told Louis van Gaal that he wants to move to Old Trafford, seemingly unconcerned with the possibility of Manchester United failing to qualify for next season's Champions League. As a result, the Red Devils are confident of beating their rivals to a £22million deal.
Old Trafford sources have told the same report that they are making "strong progress" with PSV and the winger's representatives. It is entirely possible the deal will be agreed upon before the summer transfer window opens.
Van Gaal is a big admirer of Depay and handed him a key role in his Netherlands squad at last year's World Cup despite his young age. He inspired at times and was tipped to follow Van Gaal to Old Trafford almost instantly.
Biding his time
But Van Gaal reportedly told Depay that he was not ready for a big move and advised him to remain at PSV for at least another season to continue his development. That advice has paid off as Depay has only got better for the Eredivisie outfit.
He has scored 22 goals in 33 matches in all competitions this season. His 16 league goals put him top of the scoring charts in Holland meaning he could cap his final season in Eindhoven with a league title and a golden boot.
Depay, who has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, was thought to be one of Liverpool's top targets for the summer transfer window, but Manchester United believe they have seen off interest from Brendan Rodgers.
A new role
His expected arrival will, however, raise serious doubts over several members in the current Manchester United squad. Adnan Januzaj has been struggling for game time already and won't appreciate added competition.
However, Van Gaal may see Depay as more of a central striker rather than a winger. Radamel Falcao will return to AS Monaco when his loan deal expires and Robin van Persie is now the wrong side of 30.
