Ray Parlour tells Arsenal to try and buy Petr Cech this summer

Arsenal hero Ray Parlour has revealed his belief that Arsene Wenger should target Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech this summer, though doubts the Blues would be prepared to let him go.

The Czech stopper has become the no.2 choice at Stamford Bridge following the return of Thibaut Courtois last year and as a direct result the speculation surrounding his future has been ever on the increase. Naturally with the Gunners having relative goalkeeping woes they’ve been heavily linked with the 32-year-old, and Parlour, who is of course an Invincible, has advised his former boss to seek a deal.

Parlour on Cech

"He'd be a terrific signing and provide so much experience," Parlour told Sports Mole.

"He's got some stern competition at Chelsea. He's played in some big, big games and a move across London would be great.

"Whether Chelsea would let him go, I don't know.

"He's still a young goalkeeper really and has plenty of years ahead of him. Someone like Petr Cech would be a great signing for Arsenal."

Arsenal move

Indeed Wenger would likely jump at the chance to land Cech if he thought the move at all feasible, with the Blues stopper offering invaluable experience across major competitions and that all-important repute that would give him the backing of the dressing room.

At the moment neither David Ospina or Wojciech Szczesny can boast similar talent nor character, and if Wenger is serious about his side mounting a title charge come the new campaign changes will have to be made.

One of the evident flaws in his team this season has been their aptitude at conceding sloppy goals, and though the man between the sticks is never entirely to blame, one gets the feeling Cech would command his back-line with far more control than either of the two options Wenger has to call upon at the moment.

Difficulties to overcome

For the man himself a move to the Emirates Stadium, though sure to evoke the wrath of the Chelsea faithful, would give him the chance to continue in the Premier League and challenge for more silverware across the board. Of all the top European clubs there are arguably only one or two who actually need new ‘keepers, and there’s few better options than Arsenal in that respect.

Of course the obvious sticking point would be Mourinho’s opinion about selling an important player to a potential title rival. Though in Courtois the Blues have a no.1 who could be a star performer for the next decade Cech has a special place in the hearts of the Stamford Bridge faithful, and he remains a quality ‘keeper to boot.

As far as controversial transfers go this one would be right up there with the best of them, so it’s with the faintest optimism that fans should see Parlour’s advice and expect anything to come of it. Cech would be an ideal purchase for sure, but in the current climate his skills might go against him securing any sort of move to a fellow Premier League side.

Chelsea fans, how would you feel if Cech left for Arsenal? Arsenal fans, would you welcome Cech to your fold with open arms? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below...
