Cristiano Ronaldo may be returning to Manchester after all - only it's not to Manchester United.
According to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Graham Hunter, Manchester City players are increasingly 'confident' that their club will make a big money bid for the Real Madrid superstar this summer.
Ronaldo's future at the Bernabeu has been subject to speculation over the last few months, with Manchester United, their city rivals and Paris Saint Germain all linked with the Portugal captain.
But speaking this afternoon on Revista de La Liga, Hunter reported that Manchester City's players believe the £80m-rated Ronaldo could be their new teammate for the start of next season.
"I know that the players at Manchester City were talking very, very firmly that they believed there was a successful move coming from that club over the last couple of weeks.
"Whether that makes it true or not, I wouldn't like to say.
"What we know is the mega clubs, with petrodollars, there's never been a better time to say: 'Well, would you like to cash in on your chips?'
Hunter went on to caution that any decision regarding Ronaldo's future will ultimately be decided by the player himself, and that Ronaldo has not made a decision yet.
"It will always be down to the player," Hunter continued. "When you are number one in the world, he will decide. I don't think he has decided to leave yet."
Reports regarding Ronaldo's unhappiness in the Spanish capital died down when his Ballon d'Or campaign cranked up in December, but in the wake of Real Madrid's defeat in the Clasico on Sunday, they've resurfaced.
Gareth Bale has taken much of the flak for Madrid's performance at the Nou Camp, with Carlo Ancelotti also under scrutiny after a string of disappointing results.
But while it would not be surprising to see Bale and Ancelotti leave in the summer, it certainly would be if Ronaldo was the one to depart instead.
Manchester United fans would surely love to have him back, while both City and United have the funds to make it happen. There would be a riot in Manchester if Ronaldo did return though, and it was to City over United.
What do you think - are Manchester City really in play for Ronaldo this summer?
