Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand has claimed that he would sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane 'straight away' with the summer window on the horizon, reports the Mirror.
Ferdinand, who was speaking alongside current QPR teammate Bobby Zamora whilst using a video-streaming app, insisted that Varane would be a great signing for the Red Devils as they go in search of long term success under the Louis van Gaal regime.
The 36-year-old left Old Trafford at the end of last season, of course, and his former club have endured some difficult times at the back throughout the course of the campaign.
Despite improvement of late, United have looked vulnerable at times this term, with many expecting that Van Gaal will splash the cash in an attempt to improve the club in the defensive department ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
And Fedinand, who previously formed a rock solid partnership with the club's former captain Nemanja Vidic, believes French international Varane is the man United should target.
The ex-Red Devil has, however, admitted that Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund could be the ideal signing for the club because of Van Gaal's style of play.
It appears, though, that Ferdinand has a soft spot for Varane, who has also been linked with a £25 million move to United's Premier League rivals Chelsea. On the talented Real Madrid youngster, Ferdinand stated: “I’d sign him straight away.”
It now remains to be seen as to whether Van Gaal will act in the upcoming window, but United fans would no doubt be excited by the prospect of either of Hummels or Varane arriving at the club in the near future.
Varane would be great
At just 21-years-old, Varane is already recognised as one of the leading defenders in world football. At the end of the day, if he becomes available, Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal has to act as his side go in search of improvement.
In truth, things have looked better for United at the back in recent time, with the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo starting to prove their credentials for the club. Varane, then, would only improve the club.
Don't get me wrong, though, Hummels would be a solid signing, too, as he'd add a great deal of experience to the club's back-line. It's surely unlikely the club will land them both in the next transfer window, but perhaps one of them will arrive through the Old Trafford gates.
