Brazilian footballer facing year-long ban for referee attack

Brazilian midfielder Meidson Maciel could be facing a year-long ban from the game after attacked a referee during Jacuipense's game against Juazeirense at the weekend.

Maciel was sent off for his actions but is facing a much more serious punishment for seemingly knocking the referee down with what is being described as a WWE-style clothesline.

According to reports he is staring down the barrel of a year long suspension from the game as well as a hefty fine.

To make matters worse his side went down 3-1 Juazeirense in his absence, and it's unlikely that his team-mates will be thanking him for that. 

It seems to be a rather strange time in Brazilian football at the moment. Referee Joao Batista de Arruda sent no less than four players off in Flamengo and Vasco da Gama's recent showdown, with a 22-man scuffle kicked off in the dying minutes of the game forcing the official to act. Coaches and substitutes even entered the field as the referee took action.
