Since taking control of all football matters soon after acquiring the Dallas Cowboys back in 1989, Jerry Jones has come in for his fair share of criticism for some of the decisions he has made.

Fans, critics and analysts alike have, at various times over the subsequent 26 years, pillared the Cowboys owner for everything from draft choices and free agency moves to the prices of tickets at AT&T Stadium.

NFL Genius?

Now though a new statistic has been revealed which shows that serves as fairly irrefutable evidence that Jerry Jones is actually something of a football genius...I know, we were surprised too.

According to Mike Hugenin of NFL.com, the much-maligned Jones actually has the best record amongst the league's current general managers when it comes to NFL Draft decisions. The Cowboys owner tops all other GMs in terms of the percentage of draft recruits who have gone on to make a Pro Bowl.

In total 14.7 percent of players taken by the Dallas Cowboys in the annual draft have made the end of season event. That is 34 players in total, and it is enough to beat out 17 other General Managers currently working in the NFL who also have Pro Bowlers amongst their draft picks.

Smarter than you think

The fairly impressive strike rate - only Mickey Loomis (Saints) and John Schneider (Seahawks) come close to matching the 14.7% total - will surprise many who had previously envisaged Jerry Jones' war room on draft day being host to total chaos and decisions based more on marketing than talent.

Granted, Jones has had help in recent years from Executive Vice President Stephen Jones - he was famously persuaded not to pick Johnny Manziel during the 2015 Draft - but there is no question that many of his picks have surprised people during their NFL careers.

The likes of DeMarco Murray - reigning offensive POY - was a 3rd round pick in 2011. As was 10-time Pro Bowl Tight End Jason Witten.

Best of the rest

The complete list stands as follows:

1 - Jerry Jones - Dallas Cowboys - 14.7 percent
2 - Mickey Loomis - New Orleans Saints - 14.6
3 - John Schneider - Seattle Seahawks - 14.58
4 - Rick Smith - Houston Texans - 12.33
5 - Kevin Colbert - Pittsburgh Steelers - 12.3
6 - Bill Belichick - New England Patriots - 10.53
7 - Ted Thompson - Green Bay Packers - 10.42
8 - Rick Spielman - Minnesota Vikings - 10.34
9 - Mike Brown - Cincinnati Bengals - 9.52
Tied 10 - Ozzie Newsome - Baltimore Ravens - 9.09
               Ryan Grigson - Indianapolis Colts - 9.09
