Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to move for highly-rated Valencia star Andre Gomes, reports The Mirror.
The midfielder has been earning rave reviews from Chelsea scouts and Mourinho has been impressed. He wants to reinforce the midfield at Stamford Bridge and sees Gomes as a future star.
Valencia will demand the full release clause of £36million for the 21-year-old but the Blues will go in with an opening offer of around £26m. Super agent Jorge Mendes represents both Mourinho and Mendes, giving hope to Stamford Bridge officials that they can beat other interested parties to his signature.
Manchester United interest
One of those interested parties is Manchester United, who have the money available to match Valencia's evaluation. Louis van Gaal has £150m to spending in the summer transfer window, allowing him to blow Chelsea out of the water in this particular instance.
However, Gomes himself is thought to prefer a move to London leaving Chelsea as his only option. The Portuguese youngster has been on Mourinho's radar for some time. The Special One first caught a glimpse of Gomes's creative talents when he was making waves in the Benfica B team.
Premier League strugglers
Creative players have, historically, struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League. Juan Mata is one of few success stories after he made the move from Valencia to Chelsea in 2011. However, the likes of Angel di Maria and Mesut Ozil have been recent failures.
But Chelsea scouts have reassured Mourinho over Gomes, saying that his creativity is supplemented with superior strength and tactical awareness. They are attributes that will help him succeed in the English game.
Chelsea's interest in a player of Gomes's ability is bad news for Oscar, who has been stuck in a spiral of poor form of late. The Brazilian international had a great start to the campaign but has tailed off with some critics accusing him of lacking motivation.
As with Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois, Mourinho likes giving Chelsea's top players heavy competition to keep them focused. The arrival of Gomes could kick Oscar back in to gear for next season.
