Manchester United fans hoping to see David de Gea remain at Old Trafford past the summer transfer window will be pleased to see the latest rumours doing the rounds, as it’s been claimed his agent, the notorious Jorge Mendes, is locked in negotiations with Ed Woodward.

Given how important De Gea has been for Louis van Gaal this campaign his was always going to be a contract extension heavily scrutinised by the media, and interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid has heaped pressure on Old Trafford chiefs to get a deal sorted sooner rather than later.

Talks underway

With his current contract set to expire in 2016 the clock is ticking, but if the Manchester Evening News are to be believed progress is being made.

It’s said within their report today that the Red Devils are willing to make De Gea the most handsomely paid goalkeeper in the world to guarantee a retention of his services. An offer of £200,000-a-week - supposed to be in the pipeline - would certainly do the trick, and with Mendes involved you can be sure the Spain international will see every last penny of what he’s worth.

De Gea's preference

According to MEN it’s understood that the 24-year-old is happy to remain in Manchester, despite initial fears that he would be willing to stay his hand on signing a new deal were Real’s interest to be solidified in the way of a formal offer this summer.

As of yet no paper has been signed and so his future remains ultimately up in the air, but the word on the grapevine certainly provides those hoping to see De Gea stay with some comfort.

The fact that Louis van Gaal moved to sign Victor Valdes in January was testament to the fact that United are obviously concerned that they could lose their number one, and that contract talks have been allowed to go on for this long without a solution being found is somewhat alarming.

Surprise call

Indeed it would be a surprise to see De Gea outright snub Real in the form of signing a contract prior to this summer, before he’s had the chance to at least hear what terms they would be prepared to offer.

With Iker Casillas’ shaky form from last year having carried over into this campaign De Gea is his natural successor, and a move to the Santiago Bernabeu would surely see him become Spain’s national first choice as well.

United fans, are you confident that De Gea will sign a new deal prior to the end of the season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below...
