Philadelphia Eagles fans were left scratching their heads this week when news broke that the franchise were actively planning to trade, or even release, Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis.
Those same fans, therefore, will be happy to hear the latest update from head coach Chip Kelly who spoke on the final day of the NFL owners meeting.
Whilst admitting that he and the Eagles did allow Mathis' agent to seek a trade, Kelly went on record to state his hope that the 33-year-old veteran will be on the Philly roster come Week One of the 2015 season.
With speculation growing that the two-time Pro Bowler may be the latest player out the exit door in what has been a busy offseason for Philadelphia, Kelly, via The Philadelphia Insider, admitted that the franchise had given permission to Drew Rosenhaus (Mathis' agent) to seek a trade partner.
That move seems at odds then with Kelly's suggestion that he wants to see Mathis lining up at guard for what would be his fifth season with the Eagles.
Eagles fans have watched on as Chip Kelly has carried out a major overhaul of the Eagles roster in recent weeks, during which time the likes of LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin have been jettisoned despite Kelly going on record to support their positions. Some fans are clearly struggling to believe their head coach on Evin Mathis' future too.
Having ranked amongst the top two guards in the NFL in each the past four seasons it would certainly be an odd move should the Eagles part ways with Mathis. He may be 33 but Mathis was still a Pro Bowl player last season and clearly isn't dropping off in form just yet.
As the entire NFL has seen so far this offseason though, no one can second guess Chip Kelly right now.
On the eve of free agency few would have predicted LeSean McCoy would find himself in Buffalo, or that Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray would be forming the new-look Eagles offense at this stage in March.
So while Chip Kelly says one thing today, who knows what will happen tomorrow.
