Austrian centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic is being monitored by Manchester United ahead of what is sure to be a busy summer transfer window at Old Trafford.
According to the Daily Mirror, Louis van Gaal is still keen on Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels but is keeping his options open and sees Dragovic as a viable alternative. The 24-year-old Dynamo Kiev defender isn’t as experienced as his Bundesliga counterpart but comes highly-rated and, after an impressive season, is looking likely to leave his current club.
Competition for Dragovic
The Red Devils aren’t alone in the hunt for his signature, with both Arsenal and AS Roma also known to be amongst his suitors. However given Van Gaal’s need for a defensive reshuffle he would be able to offer Dragovic first-team football at one of the world’s most established clubs, and few fans would complain were one of the trio of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling replaced.

It’s said that United will have £100 million to spend come the summer on revamping their squad, with the expected emphasis to be on creating a team capable of holding their own in the Champions League and challenging the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea for the Premier League title.
Improving the defence
To date Van Gaal’s regime has produced fruit through positive results and a drastic improvement on last season’s domestic fortunes, but more will be expected come the 2015/16 campaign.

One of the most glaringly obvious avenues for improvement comes in the form of a backline that has looked dangerously susceptible to opposition attacks this season. David de Gea’s performances between the sticks have been commendable, but one might argue that the Spain international has had far too much to do, and something has to give in time for next season if United want to be able to compete against the very best.
With that in mind perhaps Dragovic isn’t the best option moving forward. Fans would certainly be hoping for shades of Nemanja Vidic if he were to arrive; a lesser-known centre-back who could take the Premier League by storm.
Hummels the better option
However such characters are few and far between, and given the criteria he would have to fill for his arrival to be a hit at Old Trafford, Van Gaal might well prefer a more reputable name.
There can be no doubting that Hummels is the ideal candidate given his plethora of top level experience, though getting hold of him will be a considerably difficult task. Jurgen Klopp will want to prevent any bids coming in for one of his star men, and the defender himself might not be keen to leave Dortmund.
