Terry ended weeks of speculation over his future by finally putting pen to paper on a year extension to his contract, but as the ex-England international has confirmed, it doesn’t mean Mourinho has ruled out defensive additions in the summer.
Currently the Blues boast Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma competing for the starting spot alongside Terry, but a number of targets have been mooted ahead of the summer transfer window. Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane stands chief amongst them, and Terry’s statement would imply that the Frenchman might yet be the subject of an offer.
"There are a lot more games now than there used to be if we stay in big competitions and you never know, the manager might even add another player in the summer," he said to Chelsea's official website.
"It is all about competition and about the football club and winning things, moving in the right direction, and if I am part of that then great, but if not and the club is succeeding then the manager is getting it right as well."
With Terry’s career steadily winding towards its end it makes sense that Mourinho would be looking for his potential eventual successor. The Stamford Bridge stalwart might be able to hold his own at the moment but sooner or later his abilities are going to be impacted by his age, and when that happens it might not be wise for him to be the only viable option for a starting spot.
With Zouma in reserve there’s no immediate concern there, but it one can safely assume that Terry won’t be ready to play as many games next season as he has this year, and so more cover will be needed.
Of course a player like Varane - admittedly at the top end of the market - wouldn’t be ready to move to west London unless he was guaranteed regular first-team football, and with Terry and Cahill’s partnership now set to continue that doesn’t look like being a promise Mourinho can offer.
