VfL Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne harbours no ill-will towards Chelsea and would be open to a Stamford Bridge return, according to ESPN sources.
The mainstream media outlet have today claimed that they have information suggesting the Belgium international, who was sold by Jose Mourinho in January of 2014, remains interested in the idea of playing for Chelsea in the future, and therefore could be a realistic target this summer.
Just yesterday did Blues star Eden Hazard reveal his belief that perhaps his club had made a mistake in letting De Bruyne go without giving him a proper chance in the first-team, and his form this campaign for Wolfsburg would indicate that his compatriot may well be correct.
Deciding his future
ESPN state that the 23-year-old, who is one of Europe’s leading playmakers this term with 16 league assists in 26 outings, will look to leave the Volkswagen Arena if Dieter Hecking’s men fail to win major silverware, and wants his next club to be both financially powerful and capable of competing across the board.
Wolfsburg trail Bayern Munich by 10 points domestically and face Napoli in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and so his future could be decided fairly soon.
Recent rumours have inferred that Mourinho might well reciprocate De Bruyne’s interest in a Chelsea reunion, though it’s likely the Blues would have to pay around £35 million to get him back. Given their financial might that probably won’t be an unscalable obstacle, but all the same the situation will have to be negotiated carefully.
That's not to say completing a career u-turn wouldn't be a mistake for De Bruyne given that he has enjoyed so much personal success since leaving west London. The competition for places there is as great as it’s ever been, and maybe it would be better for his development to remain at Wolfsburg, where he’s guaranteed game-time, for another year.
