Manchester United winger Nani will be returning to Old Trafford this summer as Sporting have decided they cannot afford to keep him.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that Sporting have started to look for replacements for Nani, who is currently on loan at the club from Manchester United.

Manchester United want to sell the player this summer, and Sporting do want to sign him permanently but the two clubs are unlikely to agree on a fee.

The report claims Sporting could use a player as a makeweight in the deal, but cash-plus-player transfers are always awkward because of the number of moving parts involved.

In any case, Sporting believe that Nani’s wage demands - thought to be in the region of €5m per season - would be too expensive for their budget next season.

As a result, they’ve resolved to losing Nani at the end of the season and have begun the search for a player with similar characteristics but at a much cheaper price.

Nani has enjoyed an excellent spell back in Portugal with his former club and will almost certainly look to move on from United again should he be forced back to Old Trafford, as looks likely, this summer.

He was deemed surplus to requirements last year by Louis van Gaal, and while he may get a second chance, it seems far fetched to think he could return to play a role for United next season.

What do you think Manchester United fans - should van Gaal give Nani a chance in the squad next season?
