When it was announced Louis van Gaal was to become the new manager of Manchester United, Robin van Persie would have thought himself to be in contention to be appointed the club’s next captain.
Van Persie had been awarded the armband at international level by Van Gaal - someone the striker had long touted as the ideal man for United - and proved an inspirational figure as the Dutch finished third in the World Cup.
But Van Persie was not to be afforded this responsibility for his club and, eight months on from Van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford, the future of the former would appear very much in doubt. He would not have been expecting that last summer.
It would now seem likely that Van Persie will indeed depart Manchester United at the end of the season and, given that he still has much to offer, there will be no shortage of clubs in the market to recruit the 31-year-old.
The Sun appear to have an inside track on where Van Persie may be playing his football from next season, and carry a report on Sunday suggesting that a move to Turkey could be on the cards.
We take a look at this story a little further in our round-up of the papers today, with the Van Persie story one of several interesting transfer angles on this international weekend.
