Chelsea are prepared to cough up as much as £75million to beat both Manchester United and Manchester City to the signing of Gareth Bale by activating his buyout clause.
According to the Daily Mail, the Santiago Bernabeu club could be persuaded to let the Welshman go this coming summer if one Premier League club were to match their buyout clause of £75million, which would allow them to rebuild the squad.
The report claims that both Chelsea and Manchester City are the two likely candidates to be able to afford what would be a record Premier League deal, though FFP rules mean Jose Mourinho would have the upper hand in any contest for his signature.
Bale has been linked with a return to England for a while now, but those links have most regularly been with a switch to Manchester United, who tried to sign him before he moved from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid in an £85million deal in 2013.
The 25-year-old had a sensational first season under Carlo Ancelotti, which included winning a historic tenth Champions League/European Cup title, but has been the subject of fans’ displeasure this term.
Boos and whistles have greeted some confidence-stricken performances in the second half of the season, but the report claims that Bale is determined to stay for at least one more year to try and win over his critics.
However, if Real Madrid decide they are open to offers, a £75million bid from the likes of Chelsea or Manchester city would be difficult for them to turn down.
