Mario Balotelli produced the type of brilliance Liverpool have been waiting for when he found the net with a lovely strike at Anfield on Sunday. It’s just a shame it came during an exhibition match.
Balotelli was turning out for a Jamie Carragher XI against a team assembled by Steven Gerrard (no surprise the Liverpool captain chose not to select the unpredictable Italian) all in aid of the Liverpool FC foundation.
Afforded a rare start in front of the Kop, Balotelli opened the scoring with a corking effort from the edge of the area, having initially found space after jinking past Gerrard, which would have made the goal even more satisfying.
It was the fifth time Balotelli has scored on home turf this season, with all four of his competitive goals for Liverpool having come at Anfield. A very poor return for a player recruited to fill the void created by the departure of Luis Suarez.
The former Liverpool superstar was among those playing this afternoon, with Suarez forming a dream partnership - for Reds fans, anyway - alongside Fernando Torres.
Torres had left Liverpool for Chelsea four years ago in acrimonious circumstances indeed, and has endured abuse accordingly each time he has been back since. But this was not to be the case in this charity outing, as Liverpool fans sang his name in what was a party atmosphere on Merseyside.
Liverpool fans: do you think the club should sell Mario Balotelli this summer?
