Manchester United are in pole position to finally sign Brazilian centre-back Miranda this summer, because the world-class defender is no longer part of Atletico Madrid's long-term plans moving forward.
Miranda was on Louis van Gaal's radar last summer, but Atletico weren't willing to do business for a penny less than the Selecao star's €30 million release clause, thanks to a formidable partnership formed with Diego Godin that helped Diego Simeone's side win La Liga.
Things have changed this season though, with young defender José María Giménez surprising everyone with his rise to prominence. Miranda turns 31 in September and Atletico are now conscious that this year probably represents their last chance to cash in the rock-solid centre-half, with AS reporting that the player's agent will talk to United about a Premier League move again at the end of this season.
Experience is something United need
Red Devils scouts were surely at the Emirates yesterday to watch Miranda produce another superb performance in Brazil's dogged 1-0 victory over Chile.
Miranda helped keep Alexis Sanchez and co. from scoring in a towering display which underlined why he's become one of the world's most impressive defenders. The 30-year-old would definitely fit the bill as the commanding centre-back Van Gaal is still searching for, at a serious discount from last summer to boot.
Van Gaal should definitely get this deal done
Eyebrows would be raised in some quarters if Van Gaal decides to spend big on a player who is probably just moving beyond the very peak of his powers, but Miranda is exactly the kind of no-nonsense defender that could only help improve United next season.
United should make a move for Miranda a priority once Champions League qualification is secure, because playing three games a week at the highest level may just be a stretch too far for the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels would be a more glamorous addition, but the World Cup winner has endured an injury-hit campaign and a loss of form to go with it when fit.
Miranda pulls no punches and would be a tremendous squad addition for United, which should make this deal an absolute no-brainer for Van Gaal.
