Hummels, who is recognised as one of the leading defenders in world football, has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga of late, with Premier League giants Manchester United seemingly interested in his signature.
United in need?
The Red Devils, under Dutchman Louis van Gaal, have looked vulnerable in their back-line at times this term, and it now appears that they're ready to land the World Cup winning defender in the upcoming transfer window.
Watzke, however, doesn't seem concerned with the prospect of Hummels leaving the club, insisting that the club haven't received an offer for their skipper.
Speaking to Bild, he said: "Mats held talks with me and [sporting director] Michael Zorc 14 days ago, and informed us that he is mulling over his future. That's totally legitimate.
"He is under contract until 2017, and we have not received an offer. That's why we are completely relaxed."
Despite Watzke and Co. being relaxed over Hummels' future, it certainly appears that a move to Old Trafford is a possibility, but it remains to be seen as to whether the club's hierarchy step up their interest in him anytime soon.
Only Hummels is needed
At one stage this season, fans may well have expected the club to heavily splash the cash on defensive recruitment this summer, but things have certainly picked up at the back for the club in recent time.
Finally the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Co. have found some form, but United could do with someone in the mould of Hummels as they go in search of long term success under Van Gaal.
At the end of the day, the German ace has been one of the most consistent defenders in Germany's elite division for some time now, and would only add vital experience to the Red Devils' defence.
