Liverpool fans would seem right to be concerned about the future of Raheem Sterling at Anfield given recent reports regarding a supposed contract impasse between player and club.
It was confirmed weeks ago that no decision would be taken regarding a new deal until the end of the season, while on Monday the Daily Mail reported Sterling would even reject an offer of £180,000-per-week.
Worrying times indeed.
Plenty of interest
Given this apparent uncertainty, various clubs have been linked with the player including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and as of late Arsenal. Perhaps the most intriguing of all of these suitors is the Gunners.
John Cross of The Mirror revealed that Arsenal are monitoring Sterling and it could conceivably take a club record fee to bring him to the Emirates Stadium. A valuation of £50 million has been mentioned in the press.
If Liverpool decide to let their youngster make the switch it would be a huge blow for Brendan Rodgers and his Reds, making a significant dent into their ambitions for next season and beyond.
A huge loss
Given how much of an impact Sterling has already made at Liverpool since appearing on the scene, you can't help but think how big a loss he would be.
Sterling has made 88 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 17 goals while racking up 14 assists; not bad statistics for a 20-year-old.
Liverpool would also miss Sterling's versatility. He can play comfortably as a winger, attacking midfielder and striker, he has even be deployed as a wing-back. Although it would seem to be this versatility that is working against him at present.
Sterling see his best position as one of Liverpool's frontline but of late has been moved up and down the right flank. Would, however, Arsenal be able to offer the player what he wants?
One positive factor Liverpool could gain from this is perhaps the services of Arsenal winger Theo Walcott, whose contract is set to expire in the near future. Liverpool are known to be an admirer of the pacey forward so a swap deal could be in order.
