Portugal suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Cape Verde in the most surprising result of yesterday’s international action.

Fernando Santos fielded a completely different starting XI to the one that beat Serbia last Sunday, meaning no Cristiano Ronaldo, but the side did contain the likes of Hugo Almeida, Wolfsburg’s Vieirinha and promising Monaco youngster Bernando Silva.

Opener

The African side shocked their hosts with a 38th minute opener from winger Odair Fortes, who scored with an attempted cross that went straight in over debutant goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Cape Verde doubled their lead just six minutes later when a glancing header was turned in on the line by centre back Gege, who plays in Portugal for Maritimo.

Their Portuguese counterparts set about trying to find a way back into the game, with Vieirinha’s 25-yard drive tipped around the post by Vozinha, before Almeida’s diving header failed to hit the target.

Dismissal

To make matters worse, centre back Andre Pinto of Braga was sent off on what was his international debut for scything down Heldon when the Cape Verde frontman was through on goal.

They continued to pressure Vozinha in the Cape Verde goal, with Eder failing top connect with a cut back, before Ukra’s effort in injury time trickled wide of the mark.
