Wolfsburg are planning to approach Manchester United over the permanent transfer of £8m-rated Javier Hernandez.
According to the Daily Mail, the Bundesliga side are looking for replacements for Nicklas Bendtner. The Danish international has failed to hit it off and Wolfsburg are lining up alternatives with Hernandez, currently on loan at Real Madrid, their number one target.
Everton forward Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City's Edin Dzeko are also on their shortlist, but Mexican international Hernandez would cost a fraction of Lukaku's £30m asking price.
Hernandez has just one year remaining on his United contract, and Louis van Gaal is unlikely to reintegrate him into the squad after moving him on last summer.
When Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria were brought in at great cost, the new United boss allowed the likes of Hernandez and Danny Welbeck to leave.
Hernandez is still technically a Manchester United player, but even if United don't make Falcao's move permanent, as they're not expected to, it's still hard to believe van Gaal will find use for Chicharito.
He's barely got a look in at the Bernabeu this season, which was fairly easy to predict when he first joined back in August.
The Spanish giants have one of the most gifted, and expensively assembled, strike forces in football history, and Hernandez has admitted his confidence has been shredded by a lack of first-team action.
While Wolfsburg will be able to offer Hernandez the prospect of first-team football next season, it's likely that minutes on the pitch will be the forward's main concern when he picks a new club.
Premier League interest?
And for that reason he may seriously consider offers from lower Premier League clubs, with the likes of Stoke City and West Ham reportedly willing to offer him an escape route from Old Trafford.
What do you think Manchester United fans - does Hernandez have a future at the club?
