He used to wow the crowds with his pace and trickery on the pitch, but Hristo Stoichkov stuns many for the wrong reasons nowadays with fierce criticism towards star players and managers.
The temperamental former Barcelona ace, who once famously stamped on a referee's foot in a foul-mouthed outburst, is currently a football commentator in Miami, USA. He often shares his opinion on La Liga and particularly on Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Earlier this month he suggested Cristiano Ronaldo was not on a par with all-time football greats - unlike Lionel Messi - and criticised the Portuguese for not celebrating a Gareth Bale goal with the rest of the team.
Ronaldo vs Messi
"Nobody doubts the quality of either of them, but Messi is in a great vein of form and Cristiano seems to be on a bit of a downer," he told Marca.
"If I look at how he's playing and how his team is playing, then I'd clearly choose Messi. The Argentine is operating on the level that Pele and Cruyff were on.
"That's the big difference with Ronaldo just now. Cristiano is upset that he's compared to Messi, while Messi is compared to the other all-time greats."
Ronaldo vs Bale
"You can never get angry because a teammate has scored and not celebrating is to commit suicide as a teammate, because then you are worth nothing and you are worth nothing to your team," said the Bulgarian star regarding the incident with Bale.
"Maybe the obsession with Messi is affecting him, but I'm not inside his head. Messi motivates his teammates and if Ronaldo doesn't score, it affects his team."
While the Catalan legend might have been inclined to create a stir before El Clasico, he was just as blunt towards Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu in an interview for a Spanish radio in January.
Reacting to the stall in the negotiations over Messi's contract, Stoichkov labelled Bartomeu a 'pen-pusher', who 'doesn't get football' and could potentially drive the Argentinian out of the club.
"For me, Bartomeu isn't a president, he's a pen-pusher. The only thing Bartomeu knows anything about is basketball: he doesn't get football," he commented on Onda Cero's Al Primer Toque show
'They're failing to pamper Messi, continued the former Catalan attacker. 'Name one foreign player who didn't end up leaving Barca through the back door. Leo is going to lose another Ballon d'Or because of those chumps."
