Nigel de Jong appears to be closer to a move to Manchester United after holding successful talks with the club.
This has been reported by the Mirror, citing Tuttosport, who claim that the Dutchman's representatives have told United they want a package worth £4 million a year, which Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is willing to authorise to bring the AC Milan ace to Old Trafford in the summer.
De Jong, who previously played for United's Premier League rivals Manchester City, is set to run out of contract at the San Siro at the end of the season and has rejected a new contract offer from the club, according to the same report.
It appears, then, that De Jong could now be reunited with Van Gaal, who worked with him at this past summer's World Cup.
The midfield ace played a key role for the Dutch as they ended in third place in Brazil before Van Gaal arrived on English soil.
Of course, with the likes of Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera and Co. already battling it out for a place in Van Gaal's starting XI, it wouldn't be easy for De Jong to play on a regular basis at the Theatre of Dreams, but he'd no doubt be handed an important role under the guidance of the United chief.
Ok, so the signing of De Jong isn't going to get Manchester United fans overly excited, but there's no doubt he'd prove quite the coup for the club.
At the end of the day, signing a player with the pedigree of the 30-year-old on a free is worth the risk, and he'd certainly make a fine squad player for the Red Devils as Van Gaal goes in search of long term success at the club.
And, after United sold Scotsman Darren Fletcher to West Brom in the winter window, United clearly have a space in their squad, so perhaps De Jong is the man to fill it.
Ultimately if the Red Devils secure their place in next year's Champions League competition then they're going to need extra options, which would only give Van Gaal another reason to conclude the deal.
At 30, he's certainly got a couple more years at the top level left in him yet, and Van Gaal knows exactly what he could bring to the club, so this would be a good deal all round.
