LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are rolling well as we approach the NBA playoffs but that hasn't stopped rumor and speculation concerning just who is in charge at the Ohio franchise.
A report today revealed that, in a fairly unusual situation for an NBA team (never mind a successful NBA team), LeBron James has been calling a lot of the Cavs' plays lately with head coach David Blatt simply echoing the four-time MVP.
Both coach and player though have been quick to explain the situation - arguing that they see no issue with it. With the Cavaliers 48-27 they may have a point.
"I don't think that's peculiar," coach Blatt began when asked about the situation at Cleveland's Wednesday practice.
"When the game is going on and you are in the heat of the battle at times, you can't get a message through or you don't want to stop the flow, so a guy may [call the play on his own]."
"We have sets that we know what we're going to use going in...According to the flow of the game, somebody may call out a play. I don't thin that's unusual."
LeBron James offered his take on the situation which, once again, threatens to undermine the authority of the rookie head coach in Cleveland. This time at a crucial point in the season.
"We have a package," James told David McMenamin of ESPN.
"If I see something, I have the right to call plays. Kyrie [Irving] does as well. We kind of do that play calling. Coach Blatt does the play calling obviously throughout the game in timeouts, but it's great to be able to have some type of freedom out there."
With LeBron James such a dominant force in the NBA, and with the superstar returning to his home state franchise, it perhaps makes sense that David Blatt (a man without an NBA coaching record before this season) has looked to him to take some added responsibility on the hardwood.
With the Cavaliers winning at present and looking like one of the form teams heading into the postseason this sort of revelation doesn't particularly harm either party.
There is though a risk of Blatt's authority taking a hit, and his reputation dwindling, if the franchise fails to live up to lofty expectations when the clutch moments arrive.
At this point the balance of veteran superstar and untested coach is holding. That could easily change, and by the looks of things it could hinge on a play called by the man with two NBA rings.
