Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has labelled Anfield star Raheem Sterling a flop for being the subject of a candid interview with the BBC without his club’s permission.
The England international told how he had rejected a lucrative new contract offer and wasn’t going to pledge his future to Liverpool until at least the summer, prompting speculation that the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea could be in with a shot at landing him.
Carragher hits out
Yet Carragher, who has become a respected pundit since hanging up his boots after a legendary career at Anfield, believes that taking part in the interview was the wrong thing for Sterling to do.
”For a 20-year-old and his agent to be taking on Liverpool FC in the public domain is a disgrace. I have no issue about players maximising their earning potential but the agenda that is being driven from Sterling’s camp is beyond a joke," he wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
"The only way any good could have come from the BBC interview was if Sterling had said he was going to sign a new deal.
"Anything else, as he has discovered, was always going to create a massive problem. They cancelled talks with the club but not with the media. If you don’t want people talking about an issue, don’t talk about it yourself.”
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has since declared that Sterling won’t be going anywhere this summer, claiming that his club are under no pressure to sell. Some fans may be worried about experiencing a similar scenario to when Luis Suarez left for Barcelona last year, leaving the team in all sorts of trouble.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea have been pegged as potential suitors as the transfer window approaches, and even Manchester United have this morning been linked with a shock bid. The diminutive playmaker is arguably one of the most exciting talents in Europe, meaning that unless Liverpool can sort out the situation soon the 20-year-old won’t be short of forthcoming offers.
