It has been announced on WWE.com that former Divas Champion AJ Lee has retired from in-ring competition in WWE.
The WWE released the following statement late on Friday night which said: "AJ Lee (April Mendez) has decided to retire from in-ring competition with WWE. We wish AJ the very best."
AJ Lee and Paige teamed up at WrestleMania 31 to defeat The Bella Twins, which means that AJ leaves WWE with her WrestleMania unbeaten streak intact.
Unhappy with WWE
It seems the longest reigning divas champion in WWE history has been unhappy for a while following her time off to marry former WWE superstar CM Punk last year and then her time off again to recover from injury after she dropped her Divas Championship.
WWE has shown there is some heat on her backstage after both Paige and Nikki Bella talked about the amount of time she had off last year, which added together was just five months.
There has also been a lot of talk of the heat surrounding her because of the way her husband left WWE, but it's hard to believe WWE would have made an example out of her just to get to her husband.
Maybe AJ knew that she wasn't about to get another shot at the Championship that she has held three times before. With the likes of Charlotte and Sasha Banks coming through and about to be called up to the main roster, AJ could have realized she was about to be pushed down to the bottom of the chasing pack.
CM Punk hate
With various releases usually set to happen in the weeks following WrestleMania, perhaps she thought it was the best time to leave WWE on a high.
Her husband is set to begin his UFC career and fans had finally stopped aiming CM Punk chants towards her, but it seems AJ Lee hasn't been happy in WWE for a while, and whilst she is and always will be a firm fan favorite, perhaps it wasn't enough for the anti-diva.
AJ's retirement almost guarantees that Charlotte will be called up to the main roster soon and leaves the Divas Championship picture wide open. It also leaves Paige alone in a rivalry with The Bella Twins after the two had reformed the Frenemies for last week's WrestleMania.
AJ herself is yet to Tweet or comment since the announcement, but it will be interesting to see if the talented performer continues to hone her craft outside of WWE.
