It’s not out of the ordinary for some players to react angrily to opposition fans’ jeers – think Eric Cantona’s fearsome ‘kung fu’ kick aimed at a Crystal Palace supporter in 1995.
But Internacional’s Fabricio contrived to go one step further when he was sent off for swearing at his own supporters in a Brazilian league encounter in the week.
Internacional beat Ypiranga 1-0 in the Campeonato Gaucho despite having to play the last 30 minutes with just nine men after the bizarre sending off.
In a fiery encounter both teams were reduced to 10 each at the end of the first half, before Fabricio was given his marching orders just after the hour mark for appearing to visually abuse his own fans.
Despite sitting top of the championship prior to kick off Internacional supporters were clearly riled by their own sides’ display, hurling choruses of boos and jeers from the stands, before Fabricio literally took matters into own hands by flashing rude gestures at a large contingent of the home support.
The defender's middle finger salutes were immediately followed by a red card by the referee, with Fabricio then ripping off his Internacional shirt and throwing it to the ground in disgust.
Teammates, clearly shocked by what they had witnessed, tried desperately to calm fans down before attempting to reason with the infuriated Fabricio.
The Brazilian left-back immediately stormed down the tunnel, continually flashing rude gestures at supporters.
A noble attempt from team mate Juan, who took to social media to try and make light of the situation, is unlikely to have any real impact: "The fans will understand. He's an emotional guy and always gives his all. He's a hothead."
It’s unclear whether Fabricio will appear for the Brazilian club again, but one thing is for certain - he won’t be top of any Internacional supporters’ Christmas card list anytime soon.
