Paul Merson has taken his Twitter spat with Andros Townsend to the next level after directing more criticism at him following a poor performance against Burnley.
The England international hit out the Sky Sports pundit after his terrific goal against Italy. Merson had previously suggested that Townsend was not good enough to be in the England squad and his equaliser was seen by the player as proof that he was.
He tweeted: "Not bad for a player that should be 'nowhere near the squad' ay @PaulMerse?"
Merson immediately responded to the Twitter taunt, suggesting that Townsend should win more medals before throwing criticism his way.
He said: “I think he should concentrate on playing football, to be honest, and don’t worry about me.
“But I have no problems with him coming back, although I’d also say win some medals first before you call it on.
“It was a friendly against Italy and he came on in the second half. Let’s not beat about the bush, who have his other two goals been against – Montengro and San Marino?
“I have got no vendetta against him, but I am not going to sit here and say he is top drawer.”
Now Merson has thrown more abuse towards the winger, asking whether Townsend had missed the team bus on their way to Turf Moor.
Townsend was named on the bench for the game against the Clarets and was only given seven minutes to try and make the difference. The game finished 0-0.
Merson tweeted: "Just been watching the game @andros_townsend , did you miss the coach? #RubberDub #7minutes."
