Louis van Gaal has revealed that he kissed Ander Herrera during the half-time interval of Manchester United’s weekend victory over Aston Villa after the midfielder had heeded his advice in front of goal.
Herrera played a starring role in an important 3-1 triumph at Old Trafford, scoring the first and final goals for his side, and it was the opening strike that was particularly pleasing for the Manchester United manager.
The summer acquisition from Athletic Bilbao stroked past Brad Guzan with a confident flick of his right boot and Van Gaal was rather pleased to witness Herrera be so composed when the chance presented itself.
“[Herrera] has a very good kicking technique and he should only be more composed," Van Gaal told MUTV.
"I said to him 'you have to control the ball before you shoot'.
"I said that to him again in yesterday's training session, and then I kissed him at half-time because he had controlled the ball for the first time in his life and then he shot!
"But then I came after the second half to him and he said 'without control I can do it also!’”
Herrera, somewhat like his side, has had something of an up and down season but, of late, has been able to establish himself as a player of great importance to Manchester United.
It seemed for some time that the talents of the 25-year-old were far more valued on the terraces than they were in the dugout, but Van Gaal now appears to see the same player that the fans have seen for so long.
Herrera's stats have been impressive almost every time he appeared for Manchester United with his calmness on the ball something they have oft be lacking and he can make his side tick if afforded the confidence of the manager.
In fact against Aston Villa he enjoyed almost the perfect performance, scoring twice from two shots and achieving a completion rate of 96 percent from his 98 passes.
Manchester United fans: do you think Ander Herrera deserves his place in the starting XI?
