Manchester United duo Angel di Maria and Marcos Rojo have jetted out to Portugal following the 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The duo both featured in the game against the Villains, with Rojo benefiting from Chris Smalling’s illness to play 90 minutes at Old Trafford. Angel di Maria came off the bench and created Wayne Rooney’s stunning strike in the second-half.

Tricky first season

Neither have settled as they would have hoped since joining Manchester United in the summer, with both players spending plenty of time on the substitutes bench under manager Louis van Gaal.

And, things appeared to get worse for Rojo off the pitch at the weekend, when a story broke in the national newspapers regarding an affair with a fitness instructor.

The 25-year-old appears to have the support of his family, however, and posted the picture on Instagram alongside his wife on the plane to Portugal.

Both Rojo and Di Maria are familiar with the country, having spent time there with Sporting Lisbon and Benfica respectively.

Neither player is likely to have much time off though, with Van Gaal’s side set to face local rivals Manchester City in a huge derby next weekend.

Opinion

Given the size of that particular match - which could have huge Champions League consequences - some Manchester United fans might be surprised to see the pair jetting out of the country.

True, every player needs time off and what they decide to do with that time is up to them. But, with a top four place in the Premier League up for grabs, it’s a surprise that Van Gaal has sanctioned such a trip.

There is certainly no suggestion that this trip has not been agreed with the club, but questions will be asked if the performance is not up to scratch in six days time.

Manchester United fans, do you have a problem with two players going on holiday less than a week before the derby?
