Piers Morgan insists Mesut Ozil is better than Raheem Sterling

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan tore strips off Michael Owen at the weekend after the retired England striker claimed Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is a better player than Mesut Ozil.

Discussing Sterling’s contract situation, Owen told BT Sport he believes the 20-year-old is a better player than both Ozil and Danny Welbeck, and feels the youngster would be capable of holding down a place in Arsenal’s starting line-up if he made a shock move to the Emirates Stadium.

But the outspoken Morgan was left fuming and bemused by Owen’s assessment regarding Ozil, labelling it “utterly ridiculous” during his rather amusing rant on the Fletch and Sav show.

“Ozil is comfortably a better footballer than Sterling,” Morgan continued, before adding: “Benchwarmer [Owen] needs to be retired, like his horse, to stud”.

Ozil has divided Arsenal supporters since his £42.4 million move from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

Ozil's form has improved of late

The German World Cup winner flattered to deceive in his first season at the Emirates Stadium, but his form and confidence has improved since his return from knee ligament damage in January.

The 26-year-old picked up Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for February and has scored three Premier League goals and provided five assists since returning from his injury lay-off.

Sterling is a very different type of player to Ozil, who relies on his intelligence and passing ability to make an impact during matches.

The Liverpool and England starlet, on the other hand, is a dangerous weapon because of his lightning-quick pace and ability in the final third of the pitch.

Ozil to stay at Arsenal, even if Sterling arrives

If Arsenal are serious about signing the £50 million-rated winger, it will have no bearing on the future of Ozil, who Arsene Wenger is a huge fan of.

Arsenal fans are finally beginning to see the best of the former Real Madrid star, who lit up La Liga for three seasons, and more is still to come from the technically-gifted playmaker.

But would Gunners’ fans be happy if Wenger replaced Welbeck with Sterling? Have your say in the comments below!
